Twitter India Map: Twitter has fueled another controversy as its website displays a distorted map of India in the career section of its website. The map that appears in the “Tweep Life” section shows Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh detached from India.

This is not the first time that the social media platform has shown the wrong map of India. In November 2020, national security analyst Nitin A Gokhale discovered that Twitter had labeled the Indian territory of Leh in Ladakh as part of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Gokhale, the founder of Strat News Global, had marked his location as “Hall of Fame Leh”. However, the microblogging platform advertised the area as part of the PRC. The screenshot from the video read, “Nitin A Gokhale was live. Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China.
The Indian government warned CEO Jack Dorsey of the misrepresentation of the Indian map and later Twitter India apologized and deleted the associated images and tweets.
Twitter is already in dispute with the Indian government over compliance with the new IT rules.
Twitter has already lost its legal protection in India when the government removed its intermediary status. This means that Twitter will not be considered a platform hosting people’s tweets but will be editorially responsible for the content.
On June 20, India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations clarified that India’s new IT rules were “designed to empower ordinary social media users” and were finalized after the government held broad consultations with civil society and other stakeholders in 2018.
The central government drew up the 2021 Information Technology Rules (Intermediate Guidelines and Code of Ethics for Digital Media) (“new IT rules”) and notified them on February 25, 2021. The rules entered into force. effective May 26, 2021.
