University of Delhi to name future colleges after Savarkar, Sushma: Sources

The Delhi University vice-chancellor has decided to name upcoming colleges and centres after Veer Savarkar and the late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, according to sources.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Delhi has decided to name the future colleges and centers after Veer Savarkar and the late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, according to sources.

The decision was made at the university’s executive board meeting, they said.

The board also adopted the proposed changes to the selection and appointment of assistant professors despite the dissent of three members – Seema Das, Rajpal Singh Pawar and lawyer Ashok Aggarwal.

There was a proposal to cap the number of candidates for interviews, which was withdrawn earlier.

There is no cap on the number of applicants for colleges while for university departments a minimum of 30 applicants for the first vacant position and 10 for each additional vacant position will be called.

Members disagreed with the importance given to the doctorate in the selection of assistant professors, as many ad hoc and contract teachers without a doctorate would be at a disadvantage.

The dissident members demanded the implementation of the letter of December 5, 2019 from the Ministry of Education and a single regulation for the absorption of ad hoc teachers.

“Professors appointed and working on an ad hoc, temporary or contractual basis and meeting the eligibility criteria will be shortlisted for interview at the university and / or its respective colleges,” the letter from the ministry reads.

However, the VC said it would see what needs to be done about the letter, Das said.

She said they had been informed that the vice-chancellor had decided to name the future colleges and facilitation centers after Veer Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj.

The academic council of the university, at its meeting held in August, had decided that these colleges / centers could be named after Sushma Swaraj, Swami Vivekananda, Veer Savarkar and Sardar Patel.

The council also suggested the names of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley, Choudhary Brahm Prakash and CD Deshmukh.

The council had authorized the vice-chancellor to finalize the names.

The six-member committee formed to consider the issue of the disaffiliation of the University’s College of Art and its affiliation with the Delhi government-run Ambedkar University told the council that the disaffiliation should not take place and that ‘she should oppose it. .

It was decided that another committee made up of senior university officials and faculty members study the matter in detail and prepare items which can be presented to the Delhi government and LG.

The Delhi cabinet made the decision in March to merge the College of Art, currently affiliated with the University of Delhi (DU), with Ambedkar University.
