UA relaunches language proficiency courses for students and foreigners

A committee has been set up with senior faculty member Prof Ram Sewak Dubey as convener and heads of the language departments along with some other faculty members from these departments as members.

The University of Allahabad (AU) has decided to relaunch courses of proficiency in various Indian and foreign languages ​​on its campus as part of the new National Education Policy (NEP) -2020. These courses will be outside the core proficiency in the languages ​​covered by the NEP Core Course, AU officials informed.

“A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of heads of all language departments chaired by AU Vice-Chancellor Professor Sangita Srivastava,” AU PRO Jaya Kapoor informed.

It was also decided to keep open to all, students and foreigners, these refresher courses in Indian and foreign languages ​​relaunched, she added.

Previously, Indian and foreign language courses were part of university curricula. These included courses in French, Russian and German in the department of English, Chinese, Pahlavi (Middle Persian) and Tibetan in the department of Sanskrit and Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, telegu and marathi in the Hindi department. The Urdu department and the Arabic and Persian department also provided courses in these languages.

“Under the new NEP, the emphasis is on proficiency in multiple languages, including Indian and international languages. The decision was taken to rekindle the linguistic dynamism of these departments and to help students build a better professional profile for better career prospects after leaving university, ”said Kapoor. “These courses will remain open to everyone,” she said.

A committee has been set up with Professor Ram Sewak Dubey, Principal Faculty Member, as the organizer and heads of the language departments, as well as other faculty members of these departments as members.

“The committee will develop the study programs for the various courses and the fee structure as well. It would decide on aspects such as the number of places, the mode of teaching and the eligibility criteria for registration.
