PM Modi on Saturday announced to observe August 14 as the ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ in remembrance of “sisters and brothers displaced” during the partition of the Country. 

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that August 14 will be “Remembrance Day for the Horrors of Partition” in memory of “sisters and brothers displaced” during the partition of the country.

Speaking to his official Twitter account a day before India’s Independence Day, Prime Minister Modi said “the pains of partition can never be forgotten”.

In a series of posts on the microblogging site, Prime Minister Modi said, “The pains of the score can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers have been displaced and many have lost their lives to indiscriminate hatred and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, August 14 will be celebrated as the day to remember the horrors of partition. “

“May the Horrors of Partition Remembrance Day continue to remind us of the need to eliminate the poison of social divisions, discord and further strengthen the spirit of unity, social harmony, and human empowerment.”, added the Prime Minister.

India broke free from British rule that day in 1947, writing freedom with the blood of tens of thousands of people who sacrificed their lives. Even when India gained independence in 1947, the event marked the separation and division of the country into two main dominions – India and Pakistan.

The Dominion of India is today the Republic of India (since 1950); while the Dominion of Pakistan was made up of what is now called the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (since 1956) and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (since 1971).
