Main JEE scam: 7 including lab technician, Peon arrested for hacking coaching center exam room

CBI investigation reveals that Rs 12- Rs 15 lakh were paid by each candidate who succeeded in the exams and got a seat at the National Institutes of Technology.

As part of the ongoing investigation into the JEE Main scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested seven people, including two lab technicians, an assistant professor and a peon, all working at a college engineering private in Sonipat, Haryana.

All four were accused of making a conspiracy with principals and staff at Affinity Education to overturn the main JEE exams 2021. Two principals from Affinity Education had previously been arrested by the CBI and held in custody until to September 9.

In its investigation, the CBI discovered that the examination consoles and computers at the Sonepat Center had been hacked and controlled remotely from places like Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. Staff members arrested at the Sonepat center are said to have helped hack instead of money. Rs 12 – Rs 15 lakh was paid by each candidate who passed the exams and got a seat in the National Institutes of Technology.

CBI said the accused used to obtain grade 10 and 12 grade sheets, user IDs, passwords and post-dated checks from aspiring students as security. Once the admission was made, they collected a large sum of money ranging from Rs 12 to Rs 15 lakh (approximately) per candidate. The Hawala angle to money transfer is also under study.

The suspects interviewed told CBI, sources said, that students across the country have been asked to opt for Sonepat as their testing center. “Even though the applicant was in Maharashtra, he was asked to choose Sonepat as his examination center. Staff here turned a blind eye to an expert sitting in another part of the country taking the exam on behalf of the student, ”an official said.

No less than 25 laptops, seven computers, around 30 post-dated checks as well as large incriminating documents and devices, including the PDC grade sheet of various students, were recovered during the CBI raids in Delhi-NCR, Indore, Pune, Bengaluru and Sonepat.

A CBI statement last week said: “Considering the huge amount of money, the conspirators were facilitating the scam by solving the applicant’s questionnaire via remote access from a chosen examination center at Sonepat (Haryana). “
