Who is Leena Manimekalai?

Leena Manimekalai is a filmmaker, poetess and actress, Leena, who hails from Tamil Nadu, started her career as an assistant director. Apart from directing documentary films, Leena is interested in scripting. Leena’s first documentary was ‘Mahatma’. Leena has a special inclination towards problems related to Dalit, women, rural and LGBTQ communities and on these she makes short films and documentaries. 

Till now many of his films have been shared in foreign film festivals. As an actor, Leena has worked in 4 short films ‘Chellamma’, ‘Love Lost’, ‘The White Cat’ and ‘Sengdal the Dead Sea’.

If we talk about the awards he received, then he has been awarded with many awards at International and National Film Festivals. After making his film debut in the year 2002 with Mathamma short documentary, he made many controversial films. In the year 2011, Leena’s first feature film Sengdal was released. The story of this film was based on the fishermen of Dhanushkodi whose lives were being affected due to the ethnic war in Sri Lanka, a controversy arose over Leena’s film. At the same time, Leena had also got into controversies regarding the film White Van Stories.

Tweeted and wrote that ‘I am not afraid’

After creating so much ruckus on the poster of ‘Kali’, Leena made a tweet and wrote that ‘I am not afraid I have nothing to lose. I will always raise my voice with those who speak fearlessly. If it costs my life, I will give that too,’ he says, adding that the movie was a part of the program ‘Rhythm of Canada’ at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
