How to Choose the Right Career

The old adage “get a job you love and never work a day in your life” puts a lot of pressure on people who are trying to choose the right job. Can you find it really fun, it won’t even sound like a job?

Yes, that could be an exaggeration. No matter how much effort you put into choosing a career, there are days when it will sound like work. However, there will be others where you will think “I would have done this even if I had not been paid.” The trick is to choose a job that has more days than good days.

First, Learn About Yourself

Your first business order is to learn as much as you can about yourself. If you think you know everything you need to know, the results of your self-examination will be eye-opening. A skills development specialist, for example, a career counselor or development facilitator, can help you with this step but don’t be discouraged if you can’t afford one.

Next, Learn about Careers in Your List

The results from your self-assessment will include a list of suitable jobs for you based on all the criteria tested, but the quest to find the right job is not limited to this. While some tasks are almost ideal, some may not. While they may be well-suited to your personality, interests, values, and suitability, they may in some cases be inappropriate. For example, the job market may not like you, the idea may be bad, or the necessary education or training may be more than a willingness to complete it. Make an informed decision by checking each activity on your list.
