New Delhi: Did you know that one of the most common scams in the country is the popular Know Your Customer (KYC) scam? Yes! According to the findings of the Global Spam Report 2021, the KYC scam was most prevalent when scammers pretended to be a bank, wallet, or digital payment service requesting KYC documents from users, as mandated by the Reserve Bank of India.
India jumped its rankings from ninth to fourth among the 20 countries most affected by spam calls resulting from a significant increase in sales and telemarketing calls, according to a report from Truecaller.
This is the fifth edition of the annual Global Spam Report – an in-depth global study of how spam and scams affect us all.
What are the conclusions of the Global Spam Report 2021?
Over 202 million spam calls were made by a single spammer in India this year. That’s over 6,64,000 calls per day and 27,000 calls per hour every day.
This year, all categories of sales-related calls accounted for the vast majority (93.5%) of all inbound spam calls.
The average number of spam calls per user per month was 16.8, while the total volumes of spam received by Truecaller users alone exceeded 3.8 billion calls in October.
Globally, Truecaller has identified 184.5 billion calls and 586 billion messages. Of these, 37.8 billion spam calls were identified and blocked, while 182 billion messages were identified and blocked.
Brazil remained the most spammy country in the world (four consecutive years) with 32.9 spam calls per user per month.
There is a significant difference between the average number of spam calls received in Brazil (32.9 calls per user per month) compared to Peru (18.02 calls per user per month) which is in the second position, according to the report. In terms of inbound spam messages per user per month, Cameroon tops the list, followed by Somalia, Tanzania, Congo, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, and Benin.
