Election Commission Examines situation of Covid, law and order in states linked to poll

New Delhi: The Election Commission reviewed the Covid-19 situation and had discussions with the Ministry of Health, ICMR, and the director of AIIMS regarding upcoming elections in five states.

The electoral body stressed the need to vaccinate all eligible people in five states linked to the poll.

At the meeting, the Union Health Secretary briefed the Election Commission on the latest Covid-19 situation in the country, with an exponential increase in cases due to the Omicron variant.

ICMR Director Dr. Balram Bhargava and AIIMS Chief Randeep Guleria discussed other aspects related to the increase in Covid-19 cases with the EC.

The Election Commission is compiling all information related to Covid-19 through these meetings to ensure that the elections do not become a mass-market event.

EC officials also met with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and discussed ways to conduct the elections peacefully in the five states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab, and Manipur.

The polling panel also gathered input from medical experts on “security measures to be provided” during the campaign and the poll. He stressed to the Secretary of Health the need to ensure double dose vaccination for all eligible people.

Health experts have asked senior EC officials to focus primarily on virtual gatherings, seeing the unprecedented increase in Covid cases across the country.
