Aadhaar card not mandatory for CoWIN portal registration: Government informs SC

New Delhi: The central government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that the Aadhaar card is not compulsory for registration in the CoWIN portal for Covid-19 vaccination.

The Union Department of Health and Family advised the Supreme Court that any of nine identity documents including passport, driver’s license, PAN card, voter’s card, ration card, can be produced for vaccination, PTI reported.

Taking note of the submissions, a Supreme Court consisting of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and Surya Kant disposed of a plea filed by Siddharthshankar Sharma.

Sharma claimed that the Aadhaar card is mandatory to administer the Covid-19 vaccination on the CoWIN portal.

The Supreme Court had previously issued an opinion on a petition for writ asking the Center not to insist on the production of the Aadhaar card as the only proof of identification for the purpose of administering the Covid-19 vaccination.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has informed that India’s vaccination coverage against Covid-19 has surpassed 169.63 crores with the administration of more than 14.70 lakh doses of vaccine doses in the last 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said 1,99,054 patients have recovered in the past 24 hours and the cumulative number of recovered patients since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic is now 4,06,60,202.

“As a result, India’s recovery rate stands at 96.19%,” the ministry added.

The health ministry said the number of active cases in India currently stands at 11,08,938, adding that the active cases account for 2.62 percent of the country’s total positive cases.

Stating that testing capacity across the country continues to be expanded, the Ministry of Health said that in the past 24 hours a total of 11,56,363 tests have been carried out.

“India has so far carried out over 74.15 million cumulative tests,” the ministry added.

The Ministry of Health also informed that testing capacity has been strengthened across the country.

“The weekly positivity rate in the country currently stands at 9.18% and the daily positivity rate is said to be 7.25%,” the ministry added.

  1. I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your thought is excellent; the issue is one thing that not enough people are talking intelligently about. I’m very blissful that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something relating to this.
