29 Students Of West Bengal School Test Positive For Covid-19

New Delhi: At least 29 students Of West Bengal School in Nadia District, West Bengal, have tested positive for Covid-19.

According to sources, the affected students are from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kalyani, and belong to Class 9 and Class 10. Thirteen boys and 16 girls have tested positive for Covid.

School officials urged parents of infected students to take them home, PTI reported. So far, the infected students have exhibited symptoms such as coughs and colds and have been advised of the home quarantine.

Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Kalyani, Hirak Mandal, said other students at the school and teachers were also being tested for Covid-19.

After a year of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the government of West Bengal has reopened schools for students in grades 9 to 12 and colleges for offline classes from November 16.

Amid the spread of the highly transmissible variant of Omicron, parents have expressed concern about schools reopening for students. The government has yet to roll out vaccination for children.

Last week, 18 students at a school in Ghansoli district in Navi Mumbai tested positive for the virus, which resulted in the school being shut down.

During this time, more than 200 people in the country have been infected with the Omicron variant. The new variant, which was originally discovered in South Africa last month, is behind the majority of new cases recorded in Europe, leading to the introduction of strict restrictions before Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Omicron has also sparked discussions in India and abroad about the need for booster doses. Concerns have also been expressed about the immunization of children and adolescents.

Restrictions and guidelines have been announced by several state governments to deflect the third-wave resurgence.
