Rajiv Aggarwal will succeed Ankhi Das, who resigned in October last year after being embroiled in controversy for opposing the application of hate speech rules against right-wing leaders
New Delhi: Almost after a year, Facebook India filled the vacant post of director of public policy and appointed ex-IAS officer and former Uber executive Rajiv Aggarwal on Monday. Aggarwal will succeed Ankhi Das, who resigned in October last year after being embroiled in controversy for opposing the application of hate speech rules against the country’s right-wing rulers.
In his new role, Aggarwal will lead major policy development initiatives for Facebook in India on an agenda covering user security, data protection, and privacy, inclusion, and internet governance, according to a statement.
In this role, Aggarwal will report to Ajit Mohan, vice president, and general manager of Facebook India, and will be part of the Indian management team, he added.
Who is Rajiv Aggarwal?
In his last assignment, Aggarwal led Uber as public policy manager for India and South Asia. He has 26 years of experience as an Indian Administrative Officer (IAS) and has worked as a District Magistrate in nine districts in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
During his administrative tenure, he led India’s first-ever National Policy on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) as Deputy Secretary of the Department of Industry Promotion and Domestic Trade (M/o Commerce) and has been instrumental in the digital transformation of India’s intellectual property offices, according to the statement.
Aggarwal has been closely associated with the Indo-US bilateral trade forum, in addition to being India’s main negotiator on IPRs with other countries.
With his expertise and experience, Rajiv will help continue our mission to strengthen transparency, accountability, autonomous and secure communities, which we all recognize as our responsibility, said Ajit Mohan.
This is one of the significant appointments to come amid a spate of senior executive and executive recruitments over the past few months in marketing, partnerships, communications, and other key verticals demonstrating the company’s growing charter and commitment to India.
