When Manoj Kumar met Bhagat Singh’s mother: ‘She scanned me and said, I look like her son’

Manoj Kumar was relieved when Bhagat Singh’s mother allowed him to play the freedom fighter on the 1965 screen, Shaheed. On Martyrdom Day today, also known as Shaheed Diwas, we return to the old interview of the actor, where he opened up about meeting Bhagat Singh’s mother Vidyavati while she was hospitalized, and how she may have seen a picture of her son in the actor.

Kumar also joined in the discussion and how he asked Bhagat Singh’s mother to give him medicine, and he was compelled. “We met Batukeshwar Dutt there, a rebel who threw a bomb at the Assembly and Bhagat Singh. He did not take his medicine even though the doctor asked him to. Then I asked her to have her medicine, and she said, ‘If you say so, I will eat’. ”
Shaheed was the first Indian film to win three National Awards.
