UP government creates 3-member VC panel for student promotion recommendations without exam

On Friday the state government set up a committee consisting of three vice-chancellors to propose ways to promote students next semester without exams at all universities and state-owned colleges. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a week because in the case of Covid-19 which makes physical examinations a difficult task, the official said.

The vice-chancellors in the committee are prof Alok Kumar Rai, vice-chancellor of Lucknow University, prof Vinay Kumar Pathak, vice-chancellor of Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj University, Kanpur and prof Krishna Pal Singh, vice-chancellor of Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University in Bareilly, according to a letter issued by Abdul Samad, special secretary, UP government.

“The situation is critical. Last year students were promoted without exams under special circumstances. This year the situation is much worse. We had to come up with a solution, ”said Professor Vinay Kumar Pathak.

Lucknow University vice-chancellor Alok Rai had already sent a letter to the government approving the promotion of students without exams. He said, “The three-member committee will discuss and try to reach an agreement on how students will be promoted.”

The University Grants Commission recently stated that it has asked universities to keep offline exams going on in May 2021. The UGC in a notice issued on May 6, has asked higher education institutions to keep offline exams going on in mid-May 2021 to avoid physical contact on campuses and give much-needed help for students, faculty, and staff who are currently busy fighting Covid-19 in some way.

Last year also the government of the country had established a team led by the Vice Chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh (Meerut) prof NK Taneja to recommend promoting students for the next semester without exams.

After a committee of four councilors supported the cancellation of the annual exams at universities across the country and gave way to the Covid-19 case in Uttar Pradesh, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said the final decision on the matter would be taken by the state government.

Finally, in July it was decided that in Uttar Pradesh Universities, the students of final year or final semester for undergraduate and postgraduate courses were asked to appear in the final examinations, while the first and second-year students of undergraduate level and first-year students of postgraduate level were promoted to next class without exams, on basis of internal assessments as per the UGC guidelines.
