Omicron threat: the IIIT-A suspends the gradual opening of the campus for the moment

The institute allows 200-odd students already in hostels to stay, continue with online classes.

In view of alerts issued by central and state governments regarding a possible threat from the new variant of Covid Omicron, the Indian Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A) has for the moment postponed its decision to open the campus for more students and will continue to organize online courses.

Earlier, given the drastic drop in Covid-19 cases in Prayagraj and around the country, the institute had started allowing students to return to its campus in phases. The first to return were doctoral and postgraduate students from July 2021, followed by some undergraduates facing resource issues at home from September.

“The lists of these students have been compiled with the assistance of the institute’s’ Students’ Gymkhana ‘, the representative body of the students. The plan was to allow another group of 250 students facing resource constraints to return to campus. However, now this has been postponed, ”said Vijay Kumar Chaurasiya, Associate Dean (Student Affairs), IIIT-A.

The decision in this regard was taken on Thursday at a meeting of all deans and heads of departments chaired by the director of IIIT-A, Professor P Nagabhushan, he added. “At the high-level meeting, members assessed the Covid situation, particularly the Omicron variant cases in the country, and decided that the institute does not allow any students to return to campus at this time. It was further decided that those who had received permission to join the back-campus but could not join the institute for personal reasons would also not be allowed to join the campus until further notice ”, did he declare.

The official said, however, that the 200 or so people who had returned and after due process allowed to stay in hostels would continue to stay on campus. “These students can also attend their labs and take the courses online using the resources made available by the institute,” Chaurasiya added.

Likewise, newly admitted first year students who have to report to the institute from December 20 and also complete various admission formalities would be allowed to do so. “The plan is to closely monitor this development and then take a timely call in accordance with the instructions from the union’s education ministry,” he said.

In addition, all students have been requested to refrain from writing individual emails to physically join the campus and instead send their request to the Students’ Gymkhana as all future decisions in this regard will be made in accordance with the recommendation of Gymkhana.
