Monsoon Renewal: Delhi may see another spell of rain, IMD issues orange warning on September 16

Having received Monsoon with heavy rain this month, Delhi is likely to see another light bulb for moderate rainfall starting Wednesday night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A heavy rain warning was issued in the city on Thursday. Heavy rain is also expected in isolated areas.

The orange warning is issued as an extreme weather warning with the potential for disruption of traffic when roads are closed and towing and power supply disruptions.

The national capital recorded a low temperature of 25.2 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Strong winds are expected to flood the city during the day and temperatures are likely to drop to about 34 degrees Celsius, according to a MeT forecast.

Light rain may occur at night. Medium rainfall is predicted in the next two days, meaning Delhi is likely to see another rainfall record, the IMD official said.

The capital has already recorded 1,146.4 mm of rain so far this rainy season, the highest in 46 years and almost double the rainfall averageed last year.

The Safdarjung Observatory, considered to be the city’s official landmark, averaged 1,150 mm of rain during the 1975 rainy season.
Normally, Delhi records 653.6 mm of rainfall during the rainy season. Between June 1, when it starts to rain, and on September 14, the city usually receives 607.7 mm of rain.
