IIT Bombay student jumps to death from hostel building, cites depression in ‘suicide note’

New Delhi: A 26-year-old student from IIT Bombay committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his hostel located on the Powai campus in Mumbai in the early hours of Monday.

On the face of it, the deceased student was undergoing treatment for depression, a senior officer said, as reported by the PTI news agency.

The deceased student has been identified as Darshan Malviya. A Powai Police Station official said Darshan had written a message on the board in his hostel room stating that no one should be held responsible for his death.

According to PTI, Darshan Malviya’s body was spotted by a guard outside the seven-story hostel building. He called an institute official and later the police were notified.

The student was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead before admission, the police official said.

Darshan Malviya is from Madhya Pradesh. He had been taking a postgraduate course at the Indian Institute of Technology since last July.

His family members have been notified of his death, the official said.

Powai Police Station Chief Inspector Budhan Sawant said police had recorded one case of accidental death.

“The student had written a message on the board in his hostel room stating that he was undergoing treatment for depression. Further investigation is underway,” he said, as quoted by PTI.

In the statement on the incident, IIT Bombay PRO said, “A very unfortunate incident occurred at IIT Bombay today morning and we lost a Masters student. We express our condolences on the passing of our student,” ANI news agency reported.
