“Once you are completely vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask,” he said, summarizing the new guideline and encouraging more Americans to roll up their sleeves. “Vaccinate – or wear a mask until you do it.”
The guide still needs to wear masks in overcrowded areas such as buses, airplanes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, but it will help pave the way for reopening workplaces, schools and other facilities – even eliminating the need for social segregation of those completely vaccinated.
“We are all looking forward to this moment – when we can get back to normal,” said Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, at a previous White House forum.
The CDC and Biden’s management have been under pressure to reduce restrictions on fully vaccinated individuals – those who have two weeks ago their last dose of COVID-19 – in part to highlight the benefits of adoption. The new guideline may open the door to confusion, as there is no surefire way for businesses or others to distinguish between those who are fully vaccinated and those who are not.
“Millions of Americans are doing the right thing and are being vaccinated, but key workers are still being forced to play the role of unprotected consumer police officers who refuse to follow COVID safety measures,” said Marc Perrone, president of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. “Now they have to be vaccinated police?”
Walensky and Biden said people who are not completely vaccinated should continue to wear masks indoors.
“We’re here – please protect yourself until you get to the finish line,” said Biden, noting that many Americans under the age of 65 have not been fully vaccinated. He said the government would not force the mask to include guidelines for those who have not been fully vaccinated.
