Explained: How Pakistan Pacer Mohammed Amir Can Play In IPL

Pakistani cricket player Mohammed Amir has applied for British citizenship. Once a British citizen, he could play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) which is rich in money.

A Pakistani pacer, who retired on December 17, 2021 in all forms of world cricket, has moved to the United Kingdom. He will soon apply for British citizenship which will allow him to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 28-year-old has retired from all forms of international cricket after being dropped from the 35-member squad. He had his disagreement with the selection committee in Pakistan as dealing with them was like “mental anguish” for him. Mohammad Amir said the exclusion of the Pakistani team from their ongoing trip to New Zealand was a “wake up” for him and he decided not to proceed at the international level.

But how can he get British citizenship?

Mohammed Amir married in 2016 to a British citizen named Narjis Khan. She is a professional lawyer. Narjis is believed to have played a key role in the fight for Amir when he was arrested on suspicion of plotting a match in 2009. She also has two daughters who are studying in England. Amir can apply for citizenship according to his British counterpart.

In an interview with PakPassion.net, Amir said, “At the moment I have been granted permanent residency in the United Kingdom. I enjoy my cricket these days and plan to play another 6 or 7 years so let’s see how things go. My children will grow up in England and study there so no doubt I will spend the same amount of time there. ”

Mohammed Amir could play in the IPL as a British citizen. Amir will not be Pakistan’s first cricket player to do so. Azhar Mehmood also acquired British citizenship and later played for Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

While playing in the IPL, Amir said: “At the moment, I have never thought about other opportunities and opportunities and how things will turn out when I get British citizenship in the future.”

After being notorious for the scandal of correction in 2009 as a teenager, Mohammad Amir returned to power in 2016 after serving a five-year sentence. By the time he retired, Amir had played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 49 T20s in Pakistan since he started playing in 2009.
