Center Appoints Ex-Maharashtra DGP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal As CBI Director

Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is a 1985 batch officer from Maharashtra cadre and is currently posted as director general of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

New Delhi: A high-level committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday appointed IPS officer Subodh Kumar Jaiswal as the new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director.

Jaiswal is a 1985 batch officer from Maharashtra cadre and is currently posted as director general of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

According to reports, PM Modi-led three-member selection committee had on Monday shortlisted his name for the post. Jaiswal has been appointed as the director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years, the ministry order said.

Jaiswal has also served as Director-General of Police in Maharashtra in the past. He is said to have been one of the candidates in the by-elections.

Other nominees for the position are Hitesh Chandra Awasthi, 1985 IP cadre chief executive officer, Sashastra Seema Bal KR Chandra and Special Secretary, Home, V.S.K. Kaumudi.

According to an order issued by the Cabinet Committee on Nominations (ACC), Jaiswal will soon take over the CBI. The post has been vacant since Rishi Kumar Shukla resigned in February this year.

Since then, Additional Director Praveen Sinha has been given the position of head of the national investigative agency as interim king.

Jaiswal’s appointment came after a 90-minute long marathon meeting that included Indian Chief Justice NV Ramana and Congress Lok Sabha floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

Chowdhury, a congressional leader in Lok Sabha and a member of the committee to elect a new CBI director, has raised objections to the nomination process, saying the Department of Labor and Training (DoPT) has followed an “unusual approach” in selecting candidates.

In accordance with the law, the original DoPT nominates at least three or four officials in the positions of CBI Director, and is submitted to a Select Committee comprising the Prime Minister, CJI and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, who decides for the last two years.
