Captain Amarinder Singh Resigns as Punjab Chief Minister

Chandigarh: With months before the very crucial Punjab Assembly elections in early 2022, Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh resigns his top post on Saturday. Amarinder Singh tendered his resignation from Governor Banwarilal Purohit to Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

The announcement comes as a massive setback for the Congress party in the poll-linked state.

Shortly after submitting his resignation, Captain Amarinder Singh spoke to the media outside of Raj Bhavan where he said he spoke to Sonia Gandhi earlier today and told her about his decision to step down as a Punjab CM.

“This has happened for the third time in two months. They have called the deputies twice in Delhi and now this PLC is meeting. I feel humiliated and so I decided to leave the CM post. They (the party high command) can nominate anyone. trust, “Singh said, addressing reporters.

Asked about the next step for Singh, he said he would meet with other leaders and then decide on the future course of action.

Singh’s resignation is said to have come hours after the Congressional high command categorically asked him to step down as chief minister to allow the election of a new incumbent.

Political development began to take an unprecedented part from Friday afternoon when Punjab Congressman Harish Rawat tweeted the decision to hold an urgent Congress Legislative Party (CLP meeting) on Saturday.

The CLP meeting will take place around 5:30 p.m. today and Head of State Party Navjot Sidhu has ordered all MPs to attend the meeting.

Singh’s resignation can be seen as an indication of the high command appointing the new incumbent under whose leadership the party will go to the Assembly polls, scheduled for March 2022.

Former Punjab President Sunil Jakhar is said to be the frontrunner for the post of the chief minister, sources told the IANS news agency as the party wants to project a non-Sikh face ahead of the elections to counter the Aam party Aadmi (AAP) which is gaining ground in the state.

Meanwhile, AICC Party Deputy Secretary-General Ajay Maken and Harish Chowdhry arrived in Chandigarh as central observers for the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting to be held in the evening. The State Party in charge Harish Rawat is also present.
