Bengal passes resolution against Center’s extension of BSF jurisdiction, BJP says it has no legal status

Calcutta: The West Bengal Legislative Assembly led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday passed a resolution against the Modi government’s decision to extend the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) from 15 km to 50 km from the international border of the state.

Bengal became the second state after Punjab where a resolution to restrict the jurisdiction of the BSF was tabled and passed.

According to reports, the resolution was proposed by Bengal Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee under rule 169 of the House Business Conduct Procedures.

“We demand that this decision be withdrawn immediately because the strengthening of the BSF’s area of competence is a direct attack on the federal structure of the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, BJP MPs opposed the remark and demanded that it be deleted.

The resolution, however, was passed with 112 votes in favor and 63 against.

Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari said there is no legal status of the resolution passed by the Trinamool congressional government because the implementation of the MHA notification is already in effect.

The central government-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month amended the BSF law to allow force to carry out searches, seizures and arrests within a radius of 50 km, instead of 15 km, from the international border in Punjab, West Bengal. and Assam.

He also alleged that TMC’s cow and drug traffickers and human traffickers are all frightened by the Centre’s decision.

“The way TMC MPs and high-ranking ministers abused the BSF in this discussion in the Assembly is shameful. I wondered if this discussion was taking place in an Indian state or in a Pakistani / Afghani state,” he said. Adhikari said when speaking to the ANI news agency.

“There is no fence at the Bengal border, which is 500 km long. They mainly enter from coastal areas and carry out anti-national activities from Cooch Behar, North & South Dinajpur, Malda, Murshidabad and Nadia. Measures must be taken against this. immediately, “he added.
