Samsung continued to dominate global shipping for Q2 2021, but Xiaomi has benefited the most, according to a recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.
Xiaomi took second place for the first time, moving Apple to third place in Q2 2021. Huawei’s decline in shipping and LG’s exit from the smartphone business, caused a slight change in market positions this quarter.
Total export prices grew by 13.2 percent per year, slowing down the IDC’s forecast of 12.5 percent growth. Smartphone retailers shipped a total of 313.2 million devices per quarter.
IDC reports that Samsung sent 59 million units in Q2 2021 which received a market share of 18.8 percent as a top seller.
The South Korean giant sent 54 million units last year in the same quarter. Xiaomi, on the other hand, has seen a significant increase in YoY exports with 53.1 million units shipped in Q2 2021 receiving 16.9 percent of market share.
This significant increase from the 28.5 million units sent in the same quarter last year accounted for 10.3 percent of the market share. The company saw an increase in YoY growth of 86.6 percent.
Xiaomi takes second place in Global Smartphone
Apple has moved on to third place, reports IDC, with 44.2 million shipments and a market share of 14.1 percent. In the same category last year, Apple shipped 37.6 million units and enjoyed a market share of 13.6 percent.
Oppo and Vivo took third and fourth place in the IDC rankings with 32.8 million posts and 31.6 million respectively. Both smartphone traders receive 10.5 percent and 10.1 percent of the shares in each market.
In markets where Huawei and LG are strong (China and US), companies face different opportunities to gain market share.
In the US, IDC reports that Motorola, TCL, and OnePlus have earned more annual profits than they have seen in recent years thanks to the departure of LG. In China, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Apple continued to experience Huawei’s rapid decline.
The IDC reports that Chinese producer Realme has seen rapid growth over the past year among the top 10 by 149 percent and more than three-quarters of its volume from outside China.
