WhatsApp says it has blocked more than 2 million accounts in one month to prevent malicious activity

WhatsApp claims that 20 lakh accounts were blocked between May 15 and June 15, 2021, in an attempt to prevent risky behavior.

In its first public report, published under the new Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code), 2021, the company revealed that it had blocked 20,11,000 accounts over a one-month period.

Facebook-host messaging platform identifies Indian accounts using the country’s 91-digit mobile code used to register. It also added that India alone accounts for 25 per cent of all blocked accounts in the world.

WhatsApp published the first set of mediation guidelines reports on Thursday, and in this case, the company highlighted future actions to prevent risky behavior.

“Our high-level focus is to prevent accounts from sending harmful or unwanted messages on the scale,” WhatsApp said in its report that it also shares emails in Gadgets 360. ” 2 in India only from May 15 – June 15 attempting this kind of abuse. “

WhatsApp says it has blocked

According to WhatsApp, it received a total of 70 account support reports, 204 blockchain complaints (of which 63 steps have been taken), 20 additional support, 43 product support, and 8 “security issues”.

It also adds that approximately 95 percent (or 19 lakh) of account bans are automatically generated, after the service has received “multiple default messages”, or spam.

He added that the number of previously blocked accounts has increased significantly since 2019, as “our plans have increased steadily, so we are holding more accounts as we believe there are more attempts to send more or more automatic messages.”

In its report, WhatsApp shared that the global average is about 8 million blocked accounts per month, meaning that the ban in India (most of which was mass or spam) was one-fourth of the total ban in the world.

This is not surprising that India is the largest market for WhatsApp – some industry estimates suggest that India attracts approximately 400 million users, of the 2 billion active users worldwide, or about one in five users out of India that WhatsApp has.

WhatsApp added that subsequent plans for the transparent data report will be published 30-45 days after the reporting period, allowing sufficient time for data collection and verification.
