Oxygen movie review: Mélanie Laurent shines on Netflix’s fast-paced, mind-blowing adventure

Oxygen, a new French film directed by Alexandre Aja, is set almost entirely inside the cryogenic pod. Aja, who also directed the awesome Crawl thriller of 2019, seems to have come a long way since the days of Mirrors and Piranha 3D. His rise as the first filmmaker with a unique voice and style proves that we can improve our art.

A woman wakes up with a cryogenic pod that is no bigger than a coffin. It looks very natural, leading him to think that he must be sick even under some form of treatment. But why does he not remember what happened to him? Why does he not even remember who he is? Is it a loss of memory?

You get a glimpse of seemingly unconnected memories, but something else. Someone (him? Or someone else?) On wheels to the ICU in the hospital corridor, a smiling man, and mice trying to find their way through the labyrinth. As he struggles to find answers, AI’s warning voice often alerts him to a rapidly declining oxygen level.

If the set sounds like a future version of the Ryan Reynolds-starrer 2012 Buried film, you’re not far off the mark. Camera angles such as claustrophobic (although, there are allowed photography modes that you can shoot in such a small space), the plan similarly disintegrates with slow-moving, continual fear of the prisoner, hope followed by despair, and so on.

Oxygen cannot be called original in any sense of the word. It collects familiar parts from other movies but creates an original and exciting product. The movement of power does not stop, except at times when a new awareness, more terrifying than ever before, shines on him. In such cases, it pauses, forcing the viewer to enter everything.

Oxygen also explores deeper concepts and asks questions that are less appealing than the burial you once dreamed of. It can be a highly evolving, high-tech compliance in a double-dimensional aspect of burial, very green and very focused.

Mélanie Laurent, in the role of this lost woman without knowing who she is, who she is, and where she is, surprisingly, showing many emotions as new revelations come to her. A movie like this, after all, would have been interrupted before it was posted if the character was not in the mood. Laurent is amazing from start to finish.

All in all, Oxygen is a fast and fun game that plays with meetings of sorts to keep the viewer on the toes. Familiar enough with the genre, it’s mentally stimulating too.
