Facebook is banned in Russia, taking steps to help Ukrainian users

As the world looks on in shock, Ukrainian cities are falling apart and now Meta is out in full support. The move comes as Facebook is officially banned in Russia.

In a statement, the company said – Our thoughts are with everyone involved in the Ukrainian war.

We take comprehensive steps across all of our operations to help ensure the safety of our community and to support the people who use our services – in Ukraine and around the world.

Here are a few of the quick steps taken by Meta to help Ukrainian citizens.

Helping to Keep People Safe Meta added a few security features to Ukraine and Russia in response to the current situation.

Lock Your Profile: This tool allows people to lock their Facebook profile in one step. When someone’s profile is locked, non-friends can download, enhance or share their profile picture, and can see posts or other photos in someone’s profile, no matter when you posted it.

Meta teams work with non-governmental organizations and community organizations to help ensure that people are aware that these tools are available.

Friends list: Meta has temporarily removed the ability to view and search the Facebook list of friends in Ukraine and Russia to help protect people from being targeted.

Instagram Privacy and Security: Meta sends everyone to Instagram in Ukraine and Russia a high-quality notification about account privacy and security.

For public accounts, Meta reminds them to check their settings in case they want to keep their accounts private. If someone keeps their account private, any new followers will need to be authorized, and only their followers will be able to see their posts and stories.

For people who already have private accounts, Meta shares tips on how to keep their account secure using strong passwords and two-factor authentication. We have also made personalized conversations available on Instagram for all adults in Ukraine and Russia.

Privacy and Security in Meta: Meta has enhanced the tools available to Messenger users in Ukraine and Russia, such as issuing instant notification of disappearing screenshots of messages in our encrypted conversations.

WhatsApp Secure Messages: Personal messages and calls are protected by encryption automatically until they can be accessed by any government.

Users can now use the “watch once” media to send disappearance photos or video and “disappear mode” to automatically delete all new conversations after 24 hours to protect information in case you lose your phone.

Reducing the Spread of False Information

Meta takes comprehensive measures to combat the spread of inaccurate information in its operating systems and to continue communicating with external experts.

This includes removing content that violates our policies and expanding our work with third-party truth checkers to remove false claims to help ensure that fewer people are aware of them.

Meta has now begun to download worldwide content from Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, from state-owned news channels to hard-to-find content in all its forums.

Meta also blocks advertisements from the Russian government-controlled media and monetizes their accounts.

To improve reliable access to reliable information, Ukraine’s State Emergency Services has introduced a number of information assistance on WhatsApp.

The free service will connect users to critical updates, reliable information and details about emergency response procedures.

As of February 23, more than $ 20 million in non-profits have been raised on Facebook and Instagram to support Ukrainian humanitarian efforts.

Facebook groups were created to help those in need, including a team of 200,000 volunteers and donors linking transportation and refugee camps.

And a group of over 300,000 in Poland provides housing, clothing, medicine, and transportation from the border to help those in need.
