Signal receives major update; users can now change the phone number without losing conversations

The signal has received a major update. People will now be able to change their registered phone numbers without losing their old chats. This is one of the most anticipated features, already available on WhatsApp.

Signal supports encryption and all conversations are linked to the number you used to create the account. Conversations are not stored in a cloud-based service, so if a user changes his or her phone number for any reason, he / she loses all chats connected to the previous number.

This changes with the latest update released by Signal. Now, you can update your phone number and you will not have to create a new account and lose conversations.

“If you keep your existing phone, but get a new number, the Change Number feature will allow you to keep your profile and all existing messages and groups on your device, while making you available to your new phone number,” the company said.

The signal will notify all contacts when you change your phone number. In a blog post, the forum has confirmed that this feature is being distributed in both Android and iOS versions.

This feature appears in the latest version of Signal and is available for those devices running at least Android v5.30.6 or iOS v5.27.1.

It should be noted that the feature will not work if the user is unable to send or receive messages in the Signal with the existing registered phone number.

The same is true if a person misplays or loses his or her main device, or the phone is formatted.

The process of changing a phone number is very simple. One just needs to open the Signal app, visit their Profile> Settings> Account> Change Phone Number> Touch Continue.

Then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process to register your new phone number. The process mentioned above is for iOS devices. However, the steps should be the same as on Android.

In case you are wondering, yes, WhatsApp allows you to change your phone number without losing chat history.

If you decide to change it, the messaging app transmits your account information, including your profile picture, name, about, personal conversations, group chats, and settings from your old phone number to your new phone number.

Remember, Signal got a buzz when WhatsApp announced it was changing its privacy policy by 2021.

Several users have switched to different messaging apps in the hope of having a more privacy-sensitive forum to chat with friends and family.

It is good to point out that WhatsApp has made it clear that your personal conversations will remain confidential and no one will be able to read them as they are finally nailed.
