On Tuesday the national power utility NTPC said its arm, NTPC REL, would build the country’s first green Hydrogen Mobility project in Ladakh.
“NTPC REL, a 100 per cent NTPC service, has signed an MOU agreement with the Union Territory of Ladakh, to establish the country’s first green Hydrogen Mobility project in the region,” the company said in a statement.
According to the statement, the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also marked by the launch of the first NTPC solar installation in Leh made of solar panels and solar carport.
The MoU will assist NTPC to help Ladakh develop a carbon-free economy based on renewable resources and crude hydrogen.
This is also in line with the Ladakh Prime Minister’s view of ‘neutrality’, he added.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Lt Governor R K Mathur, senior government officials, the NTPC and representatives of the public.
LG has indicated that it would like Ladakh to be a hydrogen province and is happy to work with NTPC to achieve this long-term goal.
NTPC has plans to use five hydrogen buses, starting with, in the region and the company will build a solar plant and green hydrogen production unit in Leh to date.

This will place Leh as the first city in the country to undertake a green transport project with hydrogen support. This can be a trivial flow of meaning in the true sense.
NTPC has been working hard to keep its portfolio green and the green hydrogen project is another step towards achieving low carbon emissions. NTPC has been promoting the use of green hydrogen-based solutions in fields such as mobility, energy, chemicals, fertilizers, metals etc.
NTPC recently reviewed its goal of achieving 60 GW renewable energy by 2032, almost double its previous targets. Recently, NTPC sent India’s largest floating solar project of 10 MW to Visakhapatnam.
