Google’s new Wear OS 3 is here: Everything you need to know

Wear OS 3 is the latest version of the smartwatch OS by Google. It is one of the largest updates ever made to the area and is expected to be available later this year.

The Wear OS previously known as Android Wear was not known as a very easy-to-use platform in the past. But now things seem to be changing.

Google and Samsung have teamed up to create a new Wear OS. Google’s acquisition of Fitbit enabled it to continue developing software ahead.

Considering how the new version will be different from the existing Wear OS experience, many of the current smart watches, including all Snapdragon Wear 3100 chip chips and earlier, will not receive a update.

Only watches powered by the Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC and above may be upgraded to a new OS.

The Snapdragon Wear 4100 was Qualcomm’s most important upgrade chip that supplied wearable items for many years.

So, this difference in performance is probably one of the main reasons why earlier smartwatches were abandoned by Wear OS 3.

Technically Wear OS 3 is already available even though it is only 1 smart watch.

After working with Google on the platform, Samsung has become a special partner to launch Wear OS 3 with the Galaxy Watch 4. The smartwatch has been available since August 2021.

Google has now announced that the update will come in selecting Wear OS watches from Mobvi and Fossil using the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100.

Current smart watches that will support Wear OS 3 update include:

Mobvoi

  • TicWatch Pro 3 GPS / LTE
  • TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra
  • TicWatch E3

Fossil Group

  • Remains Gen 6
  • Michael Kors Gen 6
  • Skagen Falster Gen 6

Features and Release Date

Google even shared some of the apps and tiles that will be available once the new OS version starts rolling out. Includes Music on YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Pay for apps.

Apart from these apps, Google is updating the look of its most popular Tiles. Like the weather, alarm clock, handwriting timer, Google News, and Google Calendar to name a few.

There will also be a new task switch, which will be able to quickly rotate operating applications by double tapping the navigation button next to the clock.

The home screen will also be able to display thumbnails of applications running in the background.

With Fitbit on the rise, the new Wear OS will focus more on health and fitness than ever before. The platform will come with a Fitbit system with features like Active Zone Minutes.

The Wear OS has already been technically launched, as it is available on the Galaxy Watch 4. But the release on existing smartwatches (listed above) is scheduled for 2022. No other information is available right now.
