How many madrasas are there in UP?

The total number of madrasas in UP is 16,461, out of which at present 558 madrassas are getting government grants. To these 558 madrasas, the government is giving a grant of Rs 866 crore per year. The teachers and employees of madrasas get their salary from this grant. Earlier in the year 2016 in the Samajwadi Party government, a policy was made for this. This policy was made to give grants to madrassas which were recognized till 2003.

Dispute over grant in SP government

Under the policy that was made to give grants to madrassas in the SP government, the management of madrassas used to go to the court to get the grant, but the new proposal that has come, the madrassas will not get any benefit even by the court.

When Akhilesh Yadav’s government came, he gave grants to 100 madrassas out of 146 and there was a dispute about the 46 madrasas that survived. Based on the policy made by the SP regarding this matter, the managers of the madrassa approached the High Court. These people said that they are not being given grant under the policy, then the reason should be given.

It is no longer easy to become a madrasa teacher

Till now teachers were being recruited arbitrarily by the madrasa management, but now it will not be easy to become a madrasa teacher in UP. For this one has to clear MTET (Madrasa Teacher Eligibility Test) like TET (Teacher Eligibility Test). It will be organized by Uttar Pradesh Madrasa Education Council. The Madrasa Education Council has made its proposal and sent it to the government. This system will be implemented when the government approves it.

Questions have been raised many times regarding the terror connections of madrasas. Such cases have often been reported from Jammu and Kashmir, where people of madrasas were found involved in terrorist activities and they were arrested. In the same month (March 2022), a madrasa teacher was arrested in Howrah district of West Bengal. Police said that he allegedly had links with the banned terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

In July 2021, an Islamic madrasa named ‘Sirajul Uloom’ in Dalal Mohalla, Old City of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, was raided by an NIA team and the president of the madrasa, Adnan Ahmed Nadvi, was arrested.

In August 2017, a terrorist was caught from Kutesara village of Charthawal in Muzaffarnagar. Its name was Abdullah and he had enrolled in Madrasa Mahmoodiya and had got free hostel accommodation and food.
