Wrestler Bajrang Punia family announce he will return with a medal

Wrestler Bajrang Punia lost the 65kg freestyle fight to three-time world champion Haji Aliev in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Olympics, but his family is still hoping he will win the bronze medal.

Bajrang, from Khuddan village in Jhajjar, started the day by beating Kyrgyzstan Ernazar Akmataliev, then pinned Iranian Morteza Cheka Ghiasi to reach the semi-finals.

Bajrang’s family, friends, and supporters came in large numbers to watch the high-tension game in Sonepat where his parents are staying.

After his semi-final loss, his father Balwan Singh had tears in his eyes, but the people gathered there continued to cheer on Bajrang.

The family was happy when he reached the semi-finals and everyone was jubilant. However, after Bajrang lost the fight, the mood changed. But Balwan said all was not lost and there was still hope for a bronze medal.

Balwan said Bajrang told him he would do his best to win an Olympic medal. “The wins and losses are part of the game. I hope he comes back with a medal,” he added.
