In a dramatic turn of events amid the long-standing rift in the Punjab Congress, Captain Amarinder Singh tendered his resignation to Governor Banwari Lal Purohit.
New Delhi: After tendering his resignation on Saturday, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh called Navjot Singh Sidhu an “incompetent man” and “a threat to national security”, saying the head of the Punjabi unit Punjab in Congress was going to be a disaster if chosen as his successor.
“Navjot Singh Sidhu is an incompetent man, he’s going to be a disaster. I will object to his name for the next CM face. It has a link with Pakistan. It will be a threat to national security, ”former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh told ANI news agency.
In an interview with the news agency, Amarinder Singh pointed out that Sidhu “is friends with (Pakistani army chief) Qamar Javed Bajwa and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan”.
“For the sake of my country, I will oppose his name (Navjot Singh Sidhu) for CM of Punjab. It is a matter of national security. Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is his friend. Sidhu has a relationship with the head of the army, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, ”he said, quoted by ANI.

Expressing his displeasure at the way he had been summoned three times by central leadership in the past two months, the congressional veteran said: “I feel humiliated.”
Raveen Thukral, the media advisor to the chief minister, had informed that Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned from his cabinet.
In the interview with the ANI, Amarinder Singh also revealed that the acting party leader, Sonia Gandhi, apologized to him when he called her in the morning to reveal his decision to resign.
“I’m sorry Amarinder,” said Congress President Sonia Gandhi after I told her about my resignation this morning, “the former Punjabian CM revealed.
Asked about his future plans and if he is in talks with the BJP, the congressional veteran said he hasn’t spoken to anyone.
Meanwhile, AICC in charge of Punjab, Harish Rawat, has informed that two resolutions have been sent to the party’s high command which was adopted at the Legislative Party’s meeting of Congress today. “We are awaiting their decision (from the party’s high command),” ANI said, quoting Harish Rawat.
Congress observer for Punjab Ajay Maken told media that “there has been no discussion on the name” of the leader of the Legislative Party in Congress.
