WATCH: When CM Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav Met in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly

Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP), met in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday during the pledge of newly-elected legislators.

Before proceeding, both leaders smiled and shook hands in the video.

During the campaigning phase of the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh election, Yogi Adityanath and Akhilesh Yadav frequently exchanged barbs.

While Akhilesh called UP Chief Minister “baba mukhyamantri,” the BJP used “parivarvaadi” slurs to target Akhilesh’s Samajwadi Party.

Yogi Adityanath took the oath of office as Speaker of the House first. Akhilesh Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition, was also sworn in as an MLA.

After taking the oath of office, Akhilesh Yadav stated that the opposition will work constructively to improve the existing government’s accountability.

Notably, he was unanimously elected as the Leader of the SP Legislature Party as well as the Opposition leader in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

The decision was made at a meeting held at the party’s head office on Saturday, which was attended by all newly-elected MLAs and legislative council members.

After winning the Karhal Assembly seat, Akhilesh Yadav decided to resign as an MP to take on the role in the state.

In the 2019 general elections, the Samajwadi Party won five Lok Sabha seats. In the results announced earlier this month, the party won 111 seats in the assembly elections.

The BJP regained control of the state, winning over 250 seats.
