Virat Kohli Unlikely To Be Back As RCB Captain: Vettori

Virat Kohli is an athlete known for his fitness and commitment to the game. Last week, the 33-year-old dynamic hitter passed the 100 Test match mark for India in the series opener against Sri Lanka to Mohali.

Virat Kohli has played in 260 One-Day Internationals, scoring 43 centuries, and another 97 T20 Internationals as well as two months of the domestic IPL each edition.

Although Kohli is going through a tough time with his stick, there is no doubting his skills. He was out for 45 minutes against Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

He hopes to end his century-old drought in the next Test in Bengaluru and then play in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Virat Kohli will be considered a hitter for the RCB after stepping down as captain last year.

Kohli stepped down as Test captain following India’s 1-2 defeat in South Africa.

After Kohli’s departure, RCB will have to appoint a new leader. Many fans have called for Kohli to return as skipper, but former RCB skipper Daniel Vettori believes the franchise will look for another option.

“No [Virat Kohli will no longer be the captain of the RCB]. I think it’s as simple as that. I don’t think it ever works, let alone in franchise cricket or international cricket. Once the captain is gone, the right thing is for him to move on,” Vettori told ESPNCricinfo.

Bangalore splurged on Faf du Plessis and Dinesh Karthik at the recent mega auction, both of whom have experience leading a team. This could mean that Glenn Maxwell, who also has leadership experience, could take on a leadership role for Bangalore.

“I think they will consider Kohli, Maxwell and Du Plessis as the management group and even Dinesh Karthik. I think Faf will replace Maxwell if he’s not available. But if they win the first three games, they can continue with him.

“I think Maxwell is a short term long term. Three years is a long time at the IPL. They will consider Maxwell as a three year cycle and hopefully he continues to play like he did in the last IPL. They will take into account that he will be the leader for three years,” added Vettori.
