According to the report, some residents called the situation in Afghanistan’s second-largest city “catastrophic”, with heavy fighting ongoing between terrorists and government forces.

This development comes after the Taliban armed group took control of Ghazni, the capital of Ghazni province, about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of the capital Kabul.

It became the 10th provincial capital to fall into the hands of the insurgents in a few days.

Although the Taliban claim to have taken Kandahar City, there is no media report to corroborate the same.

So far, local media reports and social media updates only speak of the situation as being intense with the fighting unfolding in Afghanistan’s second-largest city.

Kandahar is home to nearly 400,000 people and is a key city that the government must protect at all costs.

Meanwhile, in a major development, Afghan government negotiators in Qatar have proposed a power-sharing deal with the Taliban to end the ongoing violence in the country, AFP news agency reported.

“Yes, the government has submitted a proposal to Qatar as a mediator. The proposal allows the Taliban to share power in exchange for stopping violence in the country,” said the source close to the news agency.

In a recent update, AFP reported that the Taliban have taken control of Herat police headquarters in western Afghanistan.
