Almost two weeks have passed since Russia attacked Ukraine. Mariupol, located on the Sea of Azov, has been surrounded by Russian troops for several days. Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said Mariupol was in a “devastating situation”.
Meanwhile, Poland offered all of its MiG-29 fighters to the United States to help the Ukrainian army. However, the US Department of Defense says the proposal raises serious concerns for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and that the plan is “not rational”.
UN officials said around two million people have left Ukraine so far. Efforts continue to isolate Russia economically. US President Joe Biden announced a ban on Russian oil imports and multinational oil and gas company Shell said it would no longer buy oil and natural gas from Russia.
At the same time, several global brands such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and General Electric have announced that they are temporarily suspending operations in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
