The governor of Rajasthan, Kalraj Mishra, insisted on Monday on the need to bridge the digital divide in the current era of information and communication technologies so that everyone can concretely benefit from online education.

He was addressing an inaugural online session of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) and e-learning teacher training program organized by the University of Delhi.

He said that the fundamental objective of the new education policy was the comprehensive development of students.

In order to make quality education accessible to everyone, from urban to rural areas, special emphasis has been placed on online and digital education in the new education policy, Mishra said.

He said the previous education system was all about learning and getting results. The students were assessed based on the scores obtained, which was a one-sided approach to student development, he said.

The governor said that the new education policy emphasizes such an education structure that will help students at different stages of learning.

MOOCs are a free web-based distance education program that ensures the participation of students from geographically remote areas in education, he explained.

MOOCs and e-learning will open new doors for accessible online education within the framework of the new education policy.

Mukul Kanitkar, secretary of the National Organization of Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal, said that in the age of online education, in addition to bridging the digital divide, it is also a great challenge to stop using digital abuse.

He suggested that we develop an educational intranet as an alternative to the Internet for educational activities.
