Key Highlights

  • According to a report, Ravichandran Ashwin had complained to the BCCI about Virat Kohli’s captaincy
  • After BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal slammed the report, Ashwin has also categorised it as ‘fake news’
  • Ashwin took to Instagram to laugh off the rumours

Ravichandran Ashwin has occasionally taken to social media over mistranslation of his comments on cricketing subjects. On Thursday, the veteran Indian cricketer, however, put an and to social media, slamming ‘fake news’ which allegedly claimed that he apparently complained to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

Soon after Kohli announced his decision of leaving the captaincy of the Indian team in the shortest format post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021, rumours of certain senior Indian players being unhappy with his leadership went afloat. In fact, a name also surfaced in the form of Ravichandran Ashwin, with a media report suggesting that the off-spinner had complained about the skipper to the BCCI.

After BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal broke his silence on the matter, quashing the rumours, Ashwin also took to Instagram to brand the news as ‘fake’.

“I am searching for the handle ‘fake news’, it used to be super fun for gossip. Oh Yaaaa!! Thank you guys.

Found them: I just heard they renamed themselves and are now called IANS and some others take quotes from them too. Super fun,” Ashwin wrote in an Instagram story.

In the last few days, the names of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara also surfaced, with reports claiming that the two were called up by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, who sought their take on Kohli’s captaincy, for a chat.

However, treasurer Dhumal has quashed all such reports saying the BCCI has not received any such complaint, be it written or verbal, about Kohli’s leadership.

“The media must stop writing this rubbish. Let me say this on the record that no Indian cricketer has made any complaint to the BCCI – written or verbal. The BCCI can’t keep answering every false report that keeps appearing. The other day, we saw some reports saying there will be changes in India’s World Cup squad. Who said that?” Dhumal told the Times of India.

Ashwin is the first cricketer to have broken his silence on the matter. Though these rumours have been afloat for a few days, Kohli himself hasn’t made any comment on the matter. With Ashwin and the BCCI treasurer Dhumal deciding to set the record straight, the India skipper could also break his silence.
