No Peeping Toms: Oppo says new feature in Find X5, X5 Pro can detect hidden spy cameras in the room

Oppo is facing a serious problem, especially for those who travel a lot, in a new update to its ColorOS operating system. With ColorOS 12.1, Oppo has introduced a new feature that will allow users to explore any hidden cameras planted by Toms peeking in any enclosed space.

This feature already seems to work on Oppo’s latest flagship phones – the Oppo Find X5 and the Find X5 Pro.

Hidden cameras are often recognized as a nuisance that hits many confined spaces commonly accessible to the public. Typical examples of this include changing rooms, baths, public laundries, and even hotels.

Criminals often set up small cameras in the hard-to-reach area of the room, which may capture potential victims who use the facility afterward.

Now Oppo has a solution for people to be aware of who has such a trap. The new version of ColorOS allows users to remove such spy cameras by scanning wireless signals in the room. The signal detection method is specially designed to detect hidden electrical objects or electronic components in the user’s area.

Sharing information on a new feature in Weibo’s post, Oppo says ColorOS 12.1 is introducing a new way to find hidden cameras. At the moment, we can see it running in the Get X5 series but only with a dedicated app called the Hidden Camera Detection app.

Oppo’s app is said to be a beta version of Oppo App Market from now on. Once downloaded, it asks users to turn off Wi-Fi and hotspot for their phones to start scanning the spy camera.

Users may need to switch on or off the room lights. As the Android Authority reports, this may be intended to detect infrared light from any of these spy cameras, allowing them to record video in the dark at night.

When it detects a spy camera, the app will then direct users to its location with hot and cold indicators.

That is, it will sound louder and louder as the user moves the phone closer to the spy camera or loses momentum if it moves away. With this, users will eventually be able to find the hidden camera when the phone is close to it.

Beta status may mean that the app will only be available on the Find X5 and X5 Pro, at least initially, or until Oppo unveils the new ColorOS 12.1 on other devices worldwide.

Once done, we can expect the app to be a standard feature that can benefit not only Oppo users but also those who use the OnePlus smartphone.
