NEET UG 2022: Weeks before a NEET Exam, a student from Chennai commits suicide

NEET UG 2022: A medical student committed suicide on Wednesday in Chennai, only weeks before the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), the country’s required entrance exam for admittance to medical colleges.
P Danush, an 18-year-old auto-kid, driver’s said in a video message to his parents and younger sibling, “I was unable to excel or do anything. My demise is entirely my fault.” NDTV was unable to independently verify the video.

The tribe kid received enrollment to a private medical school last year, but his family was unable to pay the tuition or pay for him to receive private coaching, according to authorities. He was getting ready for this year’s entrance tests for a government medical college.

Over the past few years, more than 20 medical aspirants, including board toppers, have committed suicide in Tamil Nadu after failing to achieve the necessary NEET scores for admission to government colleges.

NEET is fiercely opposed by Tamil Nadu, which makes the case that it mainly benefits those who can afford private coaching. The state government asserts that the test disadvantages children from rural and low-income areas.

The state only based medical admissions on Class 12 grades for almost ten years.

A measure seeking exemption from NEET had been approved by the Tamil Nadu assembly in September of last year, but the Governor had it returned this February. The parliament again approved it a week later, and the governor sent it to the president for his consideration in May. The President rejected a bill of a similar nature proposed by the previous AIADMK administration.

At least three other states — Karnataka, West Bengal, and Kerala — have asked an exemption from the admission test, which is considered as developing support for Tamil Nadu’s position on NEET.

Many analysts contend that NEET is really a ruse to guarantee a constant flow of students to private medical colleges, many of which are owned by politicians and charge expensive tuition.

It has been asserted that this approach has, however, checked the formerly prevalent, unregulated admittance process based on donations.

While some contend that NEET should only be used for private colleges.
