NEET Results Favour English Medium, Urban & CBSE Students: Tamil Nadu govt

NEET Results : Tamil Nadu government had decided to scrap the NEET and allow admission to medical colleges based on candidates’ performance in the Class 12 board examination in order to “ensure social justice”.

NEET Results: A committee appointed by the government of Tamil Nadu shed important light on the impact of the introduction of the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) in 2017-18.

According to data gathered by the TN panel, the admission of applicants from rural areas, economically weaker sections, Tamil schools, and state council-affiliated schools into state medical schools has declined significantly.

Based on the results, the government of Tamil Nadu had decided to abolish the NEET and allow admission to medical colleges based on the performance of candidates for the Class 12 exam in order to “ensure social justice ”.

According to the Indian Express report, the 9 members of the committee appointed by the government of Tamil Nadu found that the number of rural students admitted to medical courses increased from an average of 61.45% (before NEET) to 50.81% (post NEET). The most affected group of students is in public schools.

“On average, public school students made up 1.12% of the MBBS grade one batch in Tamil Nadu before NEETs. The figure fell to 0.16% after NEETs (unreserved seats). Last year, the state government introduced a reservation for public school students, ”the report read.

The report also highlighted the increase in the number of English-speaking students admitted to medical schools from 85.12% to 98.01% since the introduction of the NEET entrance exam. While the proportion of students in Tamil schools fell from 14.88% to 1.99%.

The panel also found that the number of students with an annual family income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh decreased from 47.42% in 2016-17 to 41.05% in 2020-2021, while those with an annual family income above Rs 2.5 lakh have grown from 52.11% to 58.95%.

Earlier Monday, the Tamil Nadu government passed a bill in the Tamil Nadu Assembly calling for the permanent exemption from the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) for Tamil Nadu students for course admissions of undergraduate medicine.
