Nature’s Havoc: lightning kills more than 75 people; Most of India soaked

In Himachal Pradesh, several districts including Kangra and Dalhousie witnessed heavy rain after days of hot weather. A cloudburst and lightning in Dharamshala led to flash floods, wrecking several properties.

New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted heavy to very heavy rains in isolated places over several parts of northern India for July 12. Several states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan have expressed concern over the recent epidemic of natural calamity.

Heavy rains and incessant thunderstorms crippled normal life and triggered a flood-like situation in several districts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. About 40 people died from lightning in Uttar Pradesh, about 20 people lost their lives and seven people died in Madhya Pradesh.

In Himachal Pradesh, several districts, including Kangra and Dalhousie, experienced heavy rains after hot days. A downpour in Dharamshala caused flash floods, destroying several properties. Two people were reported missing in Kangra district after relentless rains caused flash floods in Dharamshala.

In Rajasthan, 20 people, including 7 children, lost their lives in several lightning incidents in different parts of the state. 21 other people were injured in this natural disaster. The wounded are treated.

Upon learning of the natural calamity, the Union Home Office stepped forward to provide all possible assistance to the state government. Union Interior Minister Amit Shah informed that National Disaster Intervention Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to affected areas to carry out rescue and relief work.

PM Modi graciously announced Rs 2 lakhs each from the PM National Relief Fund to the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to lightning in parts of Rajasthan. Rs. 50,000 to be handed over to the wounded, said the Prime Minister’s office.
