Movie Review – RRR: S.S. Rajamouli delivers a power-packed entertainer

Movie Review – RRR: RRR is a period drama film directed by S.S. Rajamouli and written by Vijayendra Prasad. The film has Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles while Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani and others play crucial supporting roles. The film is financed by DVV Danayya under the DVV Entertainment banner. Music is composed by MM Keeravani and cinematography is handled by KK Senthil Kumar.

A tribal girl is forcibly separated from her tribe by the British. Komaram Bheem (Jr. NTR) is their only savior and he embarks on a mission to save her. On the other hand, British government is looking for Bheem and appoints Rama Raju (Ram Charan) to make him die or live. The film largely deals with the changing nature of the relationship between Rama and Bheem and how they fight against the British for Indian independence.

One of the things director SS Rajamouli is known for is the innovative nature with which he designs most of the scenes. In the first part of Baahubali, the war sequence and how Prabhas lights up tent roofs and uses it to control the Kalakeya army. The RRR film set contains many of these “Rajamuli innovations”. But the biggest feat he pulled off here is that despite placing almost every highlight in the trailer, he managed to give fans more than they expected.

There is a solid emotional motive for Bheem and Rama and their flashbacks are written with great clarity. The combined vision of Rajamouli and writer Vijayendra Prasad translated beautifully to the screen. The story is adapted from the life of Komaram Bheem, who fought for Indian independence and tribal rights, but Vijayendra Prasad gives it his own unique perspective by developing a fictional backstory.

Jr. NTR stars as Bheem and he’s a beast when it comes to screen presence. He is also ably supported by Ram Charan, and both take on the entire film. Even though the plot/script was filled with minor engagement issues, the energy these two bring to the table made the movie gripping and entertaining. But when the writing is this brilliant, they take it to an all-time high.

Both of these actors are supported by a solid cast of actors which includes Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani and Alia Bhatt. There are many moments inspired by the Ramayana. For example, when the tribal girl is in captivity, Bheem Komaram sends her a bracelet which reminds us of the part of the Ramayana where Hanuman gives Sita a ring to tell her that Rama is coming to save her. These moments make the story more interesting.

Another plus point of the film is Sabu Cyril’s production design which makes the film visually appealing. The house of Bheem’s love interest, which looks huge and grand, reminds us of the beauty of Mahishmathi palaces in Bahubali. The same quality is found here too. Cinematographer Senthil Kumar does a fantastic job capturing these sets well. MM Keeravani’s background score adds depth to many scenes and amplifies every mass moment, giving us a product several notches higher than it should have been. The songs don’t disturb the storyline much, with Naatu Naatu and Etthara Janda being earworms. The culmination of these technical details and Rajamouli’s vision is what makes RRR what it is.

All in all, RRR is a great addition to Rajamouli’s filmography and it’s nice to see a director hold his ground and make a film without any compromises despite having two-star heroes. It also doesn’t fail to satisfy fans of both, once again taking a masterclass, on how to make a mass commercial movie with such stunning quality in all departments.

Made on a budget of ₹550 crore (US$72 million), RRR was originally scheduled to hit theaters on July 30, 2020, which was postponed several times due to production delays and follow-up to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, the film was released in theaters on March 25, 2022.
