More than 4,000 killed in 3 devastating earthquakes in Turkey, Syria, India sends NDRF team for help

The initial quake was followed by dozens of aftershocks, including a magnitude 7.5 quake, which further disrupted search and rescue operations on Monday. In the southeastern Turkish city of Sanliurfa, rescuers worked through the night trying to pull survivors from the rubble of a seven-story building. Despite the temperature dropping below zero, panicked residents of the city huddled around the fire, preparing to spend the night in the streets.

“We are waiting here because we cannot go home,” the 55-year-old man told AFP. “Everybody’s scared.” The government and rescuers said at least 1,444 people were killed in Syria on Monday. According to the information, the figure of total deaths in both the countries has reached at least 3,823. Ankara announced late Monday that some 14,500 people were injured and 4,900 buildings collapsed.

Meanwhile, Turkey announced seven days of mourning. Rescue was hampered by a winter blizzard that covered major roads with snow. Officials said the quake disabled three major airports in the region, further complicating the delivery of vital aid. The US Geological Survey said Monday’s first quake struck at 4:17 a.m. (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 18 kilometers (11 miles) near Gaziantep, the Turkish city that is home to about two million people.

The Geological Institute of Denmark said tremors were felt off the east coast of Greenland about eight minutes after the main earthquake in Turkey. Turkey’s disaster management agency said more than 12,000 people were injured, while Syria said at least 3,411 were injured. NDRF team was also sent from India to help Turkey in this difficult time. Relief rescue work is going on to save the people trapped in the debris. 

Hundreds of buildings were razed to the ground due to the strong tremors of the earthquake. Tremors of earthquake were felt in Turkey. There have been three consecutive devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.8, 7.6 and 6.0. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. Along with this, India has also extended a helping hand to deal with this tragedy. PM Modi said that India is ready to provide all possible help to the earthquake victims.
