Maharashtra to reopen schools from August 17, education minister announces

In rural areas, schools will reopen for standards 5-8, while in urban areas, these will reopen for those in class 9-12, Varsha Gaikwad announced.

Maharashtra’s education minister’s announcement came on a day when two other states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, also presented plans for the reopening of schools in the respective states. In Karnataka, schools will reopen for students in grades 9 to 12 from August 23, while in Tamil Nadu, offline classes will start from September 1.

Earlier on July 12, 5,947 schools in rural Maharashtra resumed offline classes for standards 8 to 12 in rural areas where no cases of Covid-19 were detected. Additionally, in recent days, schools in several other states, including Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, have reopened after being closed due to the devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. In Uttar Pradesh, on-campus classes will resume on August 16 for the majority of schools for 9-12 standards.

In terms of new cases of Covid-19, Maharashtra recorded more than 6,000 new infections every day between August 3 and 5, while on August 2 the number of daily cases stood at 4,869, according to data from the government. The cumulative tally of Covid-19 infections in the western state is 6,336,220, including 6,124,278 recoveries from the viral disease and 133,530 deaths from it, according to official data.
