Story of the Jhund movie

Jhund is set in Gaddigodam, Nagpur, and begins with Manjule giving us an intimate look at the slum-dwellers there who live from hand to mouth. The youngsters engage in several illegal activities right from chain-snatching to selling illegal liquor. When not smoking drugs, some of them indulge in gambling and pick up nasty street fights.

Although Vijay Borade (Amitabh Bachchan), sports coach at St John’s School and a social worker is on the cusp of retirement, he comes across a group of slum kids playing football with a plastic barrel and decides to channelize their hidden talent in the right direction.

Slowly Vijay befriends the kids and coaches them in the game of football. As they learn more about the game and themselves, they begin to set goals for their lives. However, their acceptance in the community is not guaranteed.

The Real Story Behind Jhund Movie

Jhund is based on the life of Vijay Barse, who was recognized as a Real Hero by Sachin Tendulkar for his work in sportsmanship and helping kids from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Barse was born in Nagpur in 1945 and worked as a sports professor at Hislop College. One rainy afternoon in July 2001, he spotted a group of kids playing football with a broken bucket, and that was his Eureka moment! What happened next changed the fates of hundreds of kids.

Jhund real story

After seeing how many kids were interested in playing football, Barse decided to pursue this on a larger scale to keep them away from criminal activities.

In the year he retired, he received a sum of Rs 18 lakhs which he used to start the NGO Krida Vikas Sanstha Nagpur (KSVN) with his wife Ranjana Barse and son Abhijeet Barse. KSVN is the parent organization for Slum Soccer, a soccer academy that provides training and rehabilitation to deprived slum kids.

KSVN is a non-governmental organization whose mission is to provide motivation and fair opportunities to slum-dwelling kids and homeless young adults, using football as a tool and platform for social improvement. KSVN provides new facilities, infrastructure, and tournaments to showcase talent and skills.

Later, Vijay Barse’s son Abhijeet revealed that Barse had also worked for the Indo-Pak cross-border peace. In 2014, Barse appeared in the first episode of the Aamir Khan show Satyamev Jayate, where he was highly appreciated throughout the nation.

Jhund Movie Review: Expectations

When you have a powerhouse like Nagraj Manjule teaming up with Amitabh Bachchan, it’s hard not to be excited about the film. After the huge success of Sairat, people were eagerly waiting for Nagraj’s next film, and it left us speechless when he announced his Bollywood debut with none other than Mahanayak.

There has been an immense craze since the announcement of the movie. The first teaser and poster releases intensified the craze, but the pandemic made the wait longer. Fortunately, the wait is over now.

Although the trailer and songs created a good hype, it wasn’t as aggressive as Bollywood biggies usually are. It looked like the movie was a slow starter but would eventually click with viewers.

Jhund Movie Review: Impact

People were curious to watch Nagraj Manjule’s magic with Amitabh Bachchan, and it was clearly visible in the theatre in which I went. The occupancy for the morning show was good, and most importantly, they weren’t disappointed by what they watched on the big screen.

The film is based on the real-life of Vijay Barse, a retired sports teacher who rehabilitated the lives of kids living in a slum by sparking the interest of football in them. The spirit of the role has been rightly captured by Big B, as he gives his soul to Vijay Borade’s character. As much as Bachchan, the kids who play Borade’s ‘gang’ have done a splendid job. Above everyone, it’s the captain of the ship, Nagraj Manjule, who has really taken efforts to give us a brilliant end product. His film will make you cry and laugh, but most importantly, it has its heart in place.

Jhund Movie Review: Final Verdict

Overall, Nagraj Manjule and Amitabh Bachchan have created a satisfying film with a heart. It is suitable for all age groups. Another good thing about the film is that the Maharashtra government has allowed 100% occupancy for theatres in selected districts.

Despite the positives, there are a few things that could be a matter of concern. The first is the film’s length – Jhund is almost 3 hours long and some people might find it too lengthy. Other than that, there’s big competition in theatres with Gangubai Kathiawadi still going strong and Hollywood biggie, The Batman’s arrival. If we talk about the future competition, Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam is releasing on 11th March.

Considering all the given factors, Jhund is expected to do business in the range of Rs 45-55 crores at the box office, which would be a really good feat for a low to moderately-budgeted film.

⭐ 6.3/10

Jhund Movie Review: Minus Point

Amitabh Bachchan coaches a football team in a sports drama that is based on the sport, but there are no scenes of him playing soccer. This looks a bit over the top and the film has predictable emotions in the second half as such sports dramas have come out already.

Although the film has an intense subject matter, it lacks the thrilling elements necessary for a successful film. The drama is allowed to go on for too long and fails to capture the commercial aspects. The hyped competition is also not shown, which is a disappointment.

Jhund Movie Review: Plus Point

Amitabh Bachchan is an excellent football coach. He is shown to be very good at finding talent and coaching them in the movie. The way he expresses his emotions and gives hope to the kids is praiseworthy.

The cast of children and supporting actors in the film are a major asset. They do an excellent job of portraying the pain, happiness, and distress of slum dwellers, which makes up for most of the screen time. They’re makeup and performances are visually appealing.

Jhund: Nagraj Manjule’s first Hindi film, that too with Big B, is also a social drama which is his forte- it has the right intent, an inspiring story, all the right ingredients, realistic depiction of the slum and the kids, some good performances, but still doesn’t quite succeed in creating a very engaging or thought provoking film experience. Big B plays the role of retired coach Vijay Barse of Nagpur on whose story the film is based. He performs the role with natural ease. There’s a long courtroom monologue too impact-fully delivered by Big B. Some backstory of Mr. Barse would have helped. The slum kids cast are acting in a film for the first time and Nagraj has succeeded again in getting such cast to perform well. That has been his strength in each of his films till now- all had first time, not formally trained persons turned into actors with good or decent performances. The lead guy amongst the kids is promising, will get picked up for more films. Music of the film works within thefilm’s presentation, but not as a standalone album. He has also forced in a Zingaat type of song which is not half as enjoyable.

Inspite of taking the luxury of 3 hours length, the script fails in creating the required emotional connection of the audience with the slum kids, their struggle, transformation and eventually their personal success. Too many social issues are being tackled, some in an upfront manner, some subtly and few superfluous. There are symbolic shots that bring out the starkness of our society and contradictions in policy vs implementation. There are scenes that move you, but most lack enough depth. One also doesn’t leave on a high which the climax intends to.

Overall, Jhund doesn’t succeed in hitting the goal with the audience! Somehow, the power in the story, the pain and the efforts put in to make the idea of ‘Slum Soccer’ a successful reality doesn’t come across as impact fully.

1-Story( Remember in this decade of cineme story is hero). And here story is marvelous.
2-cast(In this film nagraj manjule managed to bring trained actors and raw new comers, which turned to be deadly combination)
3- And BGM, just wow! Ajay and atul again proved us that they are legends when its comes to music.
4-Lafda zala and jhund is my fav song in movie.

Jhund is an exceptional movie. A directors take. Nagraj, his homework, his pre-production efforts , everything is visible in every frame. even though Amitabha is the face , you don’t see him a lot. it actually depicts the slums , the language … in a very positive sense. it talks about the challenges and the Why behind the actions of slum kids . it has many fun moments and many intense too. it is a very well made movie and Amitabh acts like a directors actor. all other actors especially the slum kids are so natural and so fluent. It is a must watch. Movies like these need more people appreciation and better box office collection. we often question why Hollywood make more authentic movies ? if we do not appreciate authentic Hindi movies how would we get to see more ?
