New Delhi: Team India’s veteran off-spinner R Ashwin became the first hitter to retire from the Indian Premier League (IPL). His audacious move paid dividends for his IPL team, Rajasthan Royals (RR), as the following hitter, Riyan Parag, scored 8 off 4 balls, bringing the team total to 165/6. Lucknow Super Giants lost the match by 3 runs while chasing the target.
Cricket rule states that “A batsman is out if he retires without the permission of the umpire and without the approval of the opposing captain to resume his innings. If such a return does not occur, the batter is reported as’retired out,’ and this is treated as a dismissal for the purposes of calculating batting average.”
Ashwin finally breaks his silence on his decision to retire out
“It was an in-the-moment thing. It’s a team game that we often forget in the euphoria. But then it’s an important aspect of the game we haven’t considered,” R Ashwin, who scored 28 off 23 balls with two sixes and added 68 runs with Shimron Hetmyer for the fifth wickets, told Cricbuzz.
“T20 is a team sport, contrary to popular belief. It costs nearly as much as football. Goal scorers are analogous to opening batters or wicket-takers in cricket. However, they are only worthwhile if your goalie or defenders are willing to go the extra mile “referred to Ashwin
Sonam Tongbay of Bhutan is the only batsman to be’retired out’ in an international match. This occurred at the 2019 South Asian Games against the Maldives.
