India’s month-long presidency of the powerful UN Security Council (UNSC) has ended with “significant” consequences on key international issues including a firm decision on the situation in Afghanistan that expresses India’s views and grievances, and demanded that Afghanistan not be used to threaten any terrorist country or settlement.
India, currently serving a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the 15-nation Security Council, took over as the rotating President of the UN in August.
The Presidency concluded with the first resolution adopted by the Council on the situation in Afghanistan following the taking of the Kabul by the Taliban on the last day of the Indian Presidential Security Council’s office in August.
“As we end our UN Security Council President, we thank all our #NSC colleagues for their tremendous support in making our Presidency a success with many results,” India’s Permanent Representative to UN Ambassador T T Tirumurti said on Tuesday.

“I was very pleased to preside over the adoption of today’s important decision on Afghanistan, which unequivocally stated that the territory of Afghanistan should not be used to threaten or attack any country or to seek refuge, train terrorists or organize or fund terrorists.
“It emphasizes the terrorists and organizations appointed by the UN Security Council (resolution) 1267. This is very important in India,” Stingingla said on Monday.

India began its presidency with a high-level maritime security signature ceremony hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which Tirumurti described as “the best way” in many ways since it was the first time the Indian Prime Minister led the Security Council.

Following the August 19 Ministerial meeting on ISIL / Da’esh, the Council unanimously issued a statement to the media reiterating its strong condemnation of all forms of terrorism and noted with concern that ISIL (Da’esh) could restore its power to launch or plan a global terrorist attack.
Under the presidency of India, the Council successfully facilitated discussions on various peace and security issues in its plans, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Syria, Yemen, and the Middle East Peace Process.
Several UN member states wrote on Twitter to express gratitude to India for its leadership of the Council during the month.
