Hugo Barra Leaves Facebook To Install Healthcare Tech Space Amid Coronavirus Epidemic

Hugo Barra, Vice President of VR on Facebook, on Tuesday announced he was leaving the company after more than four years. Barra, 44, joined Facebook in 2017 to lead his Oculus VR team. Prior to his tenure on Facebook, the Brazilian technology manager worked as Xiaomi’s Vice President.

Barra announced his departure from Facebook by post on social media. He said he plans to step into the realm of health technology to help people in the midst of coronavirus infection.

“Today is my last day at Facebook Reality Labs, after 4 years working on projects that have been more exciting and challenging than anything I’ve ever experienced in my career, with bright minds and kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting,” Barra wrote in a Facebook post.

In 2017, Barra left Xiaomi and joined Facebook. He was first hired to lead the Oculus VR team. However, in May 2019, the manager participated in the creation of an environment program for the New York City-based AR / VR partner.

Barra gave details of his next career and said he was trying to get into a health care technology center.

“I believe the community is still well equipped with the tools people need to understand our health and be able to control our health outcomes,” he said. “Inspired by this thinking and after working in technology for more than 20 years, I decided to try something completely different – getting into an unknown pool (for me) and exploring the space for healthcare technology.

I hope that I will be able to apply what I have learned to working in the consumer technology industry to help solve plausible problems in the world of healthcare. ”

Interestingly, Barra announced his departure from Facebook in the middle of Facebook making smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban.

“Looking back on what we did together with Oculus Go, Quest, and Quest 2, I’m not proud at all,” he said. “And I’m equally excited about what’s yet to come, starting this year with the launch of smart Facebook screens in partnership with Ray-Ban, which will begin to integrate dots from today’s VR headsets to tomorrow’s AR glasses.”

Barra gained popularity by leading the Google category in Google in its emerging category before joining Xiaomi in August 2013. He worked with the search engine for six years between 2008 and 2013, and participated in including Vice President and spokesman for Android Product.
