Heritage school, university buildings to protect monuments in Kerala

The heritage buildings of heritage schools and colleges, built in the pre-independence period, will be declared protected monuments in Kerala, the Minister of State for Museums and Archeology said on Thursday.

“Steps will be taken to declare the old state heritage school and college buildings, which were built during the pre-independence period, as protected monuments. At least one century-old building, of historical significance , archaeological and artistic, will be taken into consideration for this, “he told the State Assembly.

Responding to a question in the House, the Minister also noted that “Kacheri Malika” inside the Union Christian College campus in Aluva in the Ernakulam district, had already been notified as a monument protected by the state department of archeology. Kacheri Malika was a former mansion where the Alangad Taluk Kacheri once operated. Devarkovil said the first phase of conservation initiatives at the former Payyannur Police Station, Kannur CSI Church and Chettuvakotta in Thrissur, the heritage buildings identified as protected monuments, have been completed. Measures to protect the Hajur Kacheri building in Malappuram and the Jewish cemetery in Ernakulam were underway, the minister added.
